NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem’s varsity girls soccer team opened the season on Tuesday, Oct. 13, with a 4-0 win over Fox Lane.
Striking first for the senior-laden Tigers team was Camille Flayhan, who scored the first of her two goals just minutes into the home contest at Tompkins Field.
Also scoring were senior Lily Guiliano and freshman Cassie Pelosi. In goal, Maddy Martabano had 5 saves in the shutout win.
“I felt we played pretty well for a first game with a truncated preseason,” said coach Bob Martin. “We looked to move the ball and the girls were unselfish. I felt we defended pretty well as a group and minimized Fox Lane’s attack. Overall, a solid first game.”
Before the game, North Salem honored its eight seniors: Flayhan, Guiliano, Martabano, Gabby Pelosi, Jane Fetterolf, Ashley Binette, Isabel Bartels, and Sydnie Jacobsen, who is out for the season with an injury.
“I am looking for leadership from all of them,” Martin said. “They all have varsity experience and can make an impact.
“This season, more than any other season, we are really just looking one day and one game at a time,” the coach added. “Sounds cliché, but for 2020 it is all we can expect. On any normal season, we would expect to compete for league and sectional titles.”
The Tigers finished their week on Saturday, Oct. 17, by traveling to Pleasantville, falling 2-0.
This week, North Salem was scheduled to play at Putnam Valley (Oct. 19) and at Haldane (Oct. 20).
