BREWSTER, N.Y. – The BYSNS (5-11) defeated Lakeland/Panas, 3-2, at the Brewster Ice Arena on Saturday, Feb. 1, avenging an early-season loss to the Rebels (3-1 on Jan. 15).

“The win means a lot to us on this final stretch, to try and make sectionals,” said BYSNS co-coach Joey Bonitatibus.

Bonitatibus said his squad was motivated right from the start.

“The team came out firing today,” Bonitatibus said. “Our energy was high and, even after we went down 1-0, we didn’t let it affect our game. Captain Sava Makarenko made some big plays, which led to two big goals.”

Lakeland/Panas (9-7) registered the first goal of the game in a very busy second period, when Joseph  Jimenez scored, off an assist from Andrew Dzubak.

The BYSNS got going after that, when Brien Suchanek scored, off an assist from Makarenko.

Frankie Vigiletti would give the BYSNS a 2-1 lead, with an unassisted goal, before Makarenko, courtesy of an assist from Ian Woloshyn, put the BYSNS up by two goals.

That scoring spree allowed the BYSNS to outscore the Rebels, 3-1, in the second period.

Makarenko’s goal turned out to be a huge one, since Jimenez scored an unassisted goal in the third period, to cut the BYSNS’ lead to 3-2.

“It was an electrifying moment not just for me but for the whole team,” Makarenko said of the BYSNS’ victory.

Playing well in goal for the BYSNS was Matt Gergley, who made 29 saves.
