NORTH SALEM, N.Y.— North Salem’s softball team fell 9-0 to second-seeded Westlake in the Section 1 Class B opening round on Friday, May 18 at Westlake High School.
“They were just too strong,” North Salem coach Bob Mittelstadt said of Westlake. “They’ve got some great hitters and we didn’t match up well with them. We played hard like we do every game, but we just weren’t as good as most of the teams we’ve played this year.”
Looking sharp at the start, the Tigers opened the game with a double from Claire Bonzani before Mikaela Spennicchia hit a single to fill the corners with no outs.
But that script wasn’t meant to be, as North Salem (6-15) failed to score in the first inning and didn’t see many more offensive opportunities.
“I’m very proud of the kids, they play very hard and never give up,” Mittelstadt said. “They didn’t disappoint me any game at any point in the season. They were very enjoyable to coach. They may not have been the greatest softball players in the world, but they were some of the nicest and quality kids that I’ve ever coached.”
