NORTH SALEM, N.Y.-By the way they walked out of the locker room after the game, you couldn’t be certain whether North Salem’s boys basketball team won or lost.

The Tigers weren’t happy with the way they played but they were able to escape with a 52-50 win over rival Haldane in the Putnam Challenge at Carmel High School.

“We did enough to win but I thought Haldane just outplayed us,” North Salem coach Henry Sassone said. “They took us out of what we wanted to do. We became complacent after the first four minutes of the game and were living and dying on the three. We had a nine-point lead early on and then we stopped going to the rim. We settled for threes and let them back in the game. We were in foul trouble at halftime and had all five starters with two fouls. We’ve got to learn to play some defense.”
