North Salem rising senior Lydia Werlau is a midfielder and plays attack on the girls lacrosse team. She’s also on the soccer team.
How old were you when you started playing lacrosse and how did you get started?
I started in third grade. I mainly became involved with the sport because both my siblings and my older cousins played.
What do you think are your strengths as a lacrosse player?
My strengths as a lacrosse player would be my offensive skills. I have the need to score goals and the drive to want to be successful not just as an individual but as a team.
How did you feel about the team’s season and what you accomplished as a team?
I am very proud of my team and how hard everyone has worked this season. Our improvement has shown throughout the season.
For the upcoming soccer season, what is the team looking to work on over the summer and what are your expectations for the upcoming season?
My team is looking forward to working on our skills and fitness. It would really benefit our group if we were able to improve our skills especially. We are expecting to have a good season. Win or lose, the girls on the team bond together really well and it’s a fun time.
What is your favorite team activity, pregame or postgame ritual that you share with your teammates in lacrosse?
My favorite pregame activity would be doing three vs. two with my fellow teammates Amy Fetterolf, Catrina Cantarella, Katie Wagner and Grace Curran. We also have a great time and it gets us hyped for the game.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My brother and sister. Both of them have a passion for the sport and never give up. My brother has shown me that if you want something, don’t just expect it, you have to work for it no matter what. My sister has shown me that practice makes perfect. She goes outside rain or shine, day and night, and will practice something until she gets it right. She doesn’t need someone to tell her to do it, she does it on her own.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
A lot of people don’t know I have a serious passion for gardening.
Do you plan on continuing to play lacrosse in college? If yes, where are you going and why did you choose that school?
Yes, I am verbally committed to play lacrosse at Sacred Heart University. I chose this school because it was the perfect fit. At first when I was being looked at I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go there. It wasn’t until I had my overnight at the campus when I realized that this was the school I wanted to spend the next four years at.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what and why?
Like most normal young teens, I have not yet decided.
Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro or college sports team?
My favorite professional athlete would either be JoJo Marasco or Sammy Jo Tracy. These athletes are insane at what they do and they’re players that I’ll watch videos on all day just doing cool moves and tricks on the field. Plus they’re both from this area so it’s cool to see what a neighboring town has to offer.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
My favorite music to warm up to is any EDM song. I like this kind of music because it gets you pumped up and excited.
If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?
It would definitely be having the ability to fly. I could get to places so much faster with a sweet view too.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
I would go to Australia. I’ve had an obsession with Australia ever since I was young and I would love to go surfing and play with koalas and kangaroos. I probably wouldn’t be playing with them actually but maybe just to see them would be cool too.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?
I love to have a peach and a nice cold Dr. Pepper. It’s not the healthiest thing to eat, but it sure does taste good. After games I love a nice filet steak with mashed potatoes. That always tastes good too.
Best place to eat in North Salem and why?
Hayfields. They’re close to school and their food is amazing.
Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Instagram? Why?
Instagram. I like to scroll through and see where people have been or what they’re currently doing. No one in my grade really has Facebook anymore and Twitter is too much reading.
For a young athlete growing up in North Salem, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the lacrosse program and why should they go out for the team?
I would tell them to learn as much about the game as they can while they’re young. I would say this because the more you know, the more involved you become and want to get better. They should try out for the team because it’s a way to gain some quality friends. It’s a great exercise and the game itself is so much fun.
