(NORTH SALEM, N.Y.0 -- With three top administrators retiring, the North Salem Central School District has been working to find replacements before July 1.
Middle/High School Principal Dr. Patricia Cyganovich and Assistant Principal Dr. George Bovino are stepping down. Director of Instruction and Human Resources, Dr. Michael Hibbard is also retiring, and will be replaced by the Assistant Principal of Pequenakonck Elementary School, Julio Vazquez.  The district is in the process of looking for a replacement assistant principal at PQ.
“We are grateful for the insights of the faculty, parents, administrators and trustees who served on the Interview Committee,” said Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Freeston. “We had a total of 134 applicants for the position.”
Freeston said the selection process has been going well overall.
“I am very pleased with the quality of the applicant pools for all three positions as we enter the interview phase in the next 10 days,” he explained.
There are three interview committees that have been part of the selection process. They are comprised of teachers, parents, administrators and representatives from the North Salem Board of Education. The committees are tasked with evaluating each candidate’s credentials and seeing if they are a potential match for the North Salem Central School District.
Once the pool of applicants is whittled down, the finalists for each position would then be interviewed by the Board of Education before they are appointed.
Those participating in the interview process must sign confidentiality agreements before meeting with candidates.
Freeston said the PQ Assistant Principal Interview Committee will meet this week to interview six candidates. The six finalists were selected from a pool of more than 250 candidates that were then whittled down to 16. Each of the 16 was interviewed by Principal Mary Johnson.
The MSHS Assistant Principal Interview Committee will also meet this week to interview internal candidates.
The MSHS principal search has been facilitated by John McCarthy and Lynn Allen from Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES.
Using results from a district focus group, they screened the 100 plus applicants, conducted interviews with the best of the applicant pool, and have recommended seven finalists.  Director of Special Education Adam VanDerStuyf and Freeston will interview these candidates next week.  The Interview Committee will interview three finalists the following week.
Board of Education interviews and appointments will occur in time for the new administrators to start this summer, well in advance of the start of school in September.

Winter Is Fleeting

By some alchemy, winter is flying by us this year. Faster and faster every year of our lives. We’re nearly two-thirds done with the season already. There’s just a month and a few extra days left to withstand. A snap of the fingers and it will be gone. Finished. Another winter to enter into our personal annals, in which we thrived or merely survived.

Let's Eliminate the Electoral College

Why do we have the Electoral College? It is certainly not a college and it doesn’t educate any one. Yet it certainly can elect a president of the United States.

That’s what happened in 2016 when a small majority of the electoral votes elected Donald J. Trump president of the United States. Mr. Trump was not selected by the majority of the people of our country. The majority of ...

Taking Baby Steps

OK, we’re a month into the New Year and not only have I NOT lost weight, but I’ve put back on the three pounds I lost four weeks ago! Many people would be discouraged and throw in the towel at this point, but I would encourage you to reboot your program and start again, every morning if necessary. Losing weight, saving money or getting organized are about mindset.

First, ...

A Trip to the 'Liberry'

Raise your hand if you didn’t—did not—call the library the “liberry” when you were little. I’m guessing not a lot of hands just went up.

Didn’t just about all of us say “liberry” when we were learning to read? (Well, whaddya expect when a place is named something way too easy for little kids to mispronounce?)

OK. Now, raise your hand if ...

Peekskill AIMs to Become a 'Mediapolis'

What could the city of Peekskill possibly have in common with Silicon Valley, Hollywood and New York City? Like those familiar centers of multimedia creativity and commerce, the historic river town is downright giddy with excitement about transforming itself into a mediapolis, to coin a phrase.

Thanks to local movers and shakers, led by prominent Peekskill businessman Ben Green, the ...

I'm Mrs. Heat Miser

To be perfectly honest, I did not need a large rodent with insomnia to convince me that we had six more weeks of winter. It’s been so cold outside lately that when I go out, my nostrils stick together. The dog is so hesitant to go out that he does his business right on the deck, less than five feet from the door, and then gives me a look of contemptuous indignation when he comes back in the ...

Getting Off on the Wrong Foot

“What happened to your ankle?” asked my neighbor when he saw the orthopedic boot on my right foot.

“I tripped while I was in Pamplona running with the bulls,” I told him.

He raised his eyebrows. “Really?”

“No. Not really,” I admitted. “I was actually climbing Machu Picchu and I fell over a llama.”

“Seriously?” he ...

'Bravo' to Column on Trump

February 15, 2018

To the editor,

I am responding to guest columnist Sy Globerman’s article, “Trump is revivifying America” in the Thursday, Feb. 8 edition of your newspaper.

Mr. Globerman is right on target. Bravo to him for stating the facts about President Trump. All we seem to read and hear from the media is Trump bashing.

Therefore, it’s quite refreshing to read about ...
