NORTH SALEM, N.Y.-Christmas and New Year’s Eve power outages were the final straw for North Salem Supervisor Warren Lucas and Somers Supervisor Rick Morrissey, who together last week filed a formal complaint against NYSEG with the New York State Public Service Commission.

The utility company provides electricity to more than 25,000 residents in North Salem and Somers. Since October, Lucas and Morrissey said, many of these customers have endured frequent blackouts that, on two occasions, have lasted more than 10 hours.

“The abnormal frequency and length of power outages are occurring at a rate never witnessed by our communities,” they said.

The prolonged outages, they said, are not just an inconvenience, but a health risk, especially to the seniors who live in Heritage Hills in Somers, “whose health and wellbeing are reliant on their access to electricity.”

The first storm-related power outage of notable length occurred just before Halloween, when a tropical storm ravaged the East Coast and left up to 405 homes in North Salem without power—some from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.
