Outhouse Orchards and Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard, both located on Hardscrabble Road, were buzzing with time-honored seasonal activities. Families from near and far flocked to the farms for a taste of a quintessential fall weekend in the country—and those delicious apple cider doughnuts.

Outhouse Orchards offered bouncy castles, their annual corn maze, pumpkin picking, apple picking and pear picking, hay rides, pony rides and more. At its farm stand, visitors could purchase flowers, preserves, cider doughnuts and more. Dogs are welcome.

What consistently rates 4.9 to 5.0 on the major customer review sites? What business is both destination and resource, a tradition, a haven, valued, endangered and has something for everyone, at every age?
Hands down, it is your local independent bookstore. They have faced challenges (think “When Harry Met Sally”) and still do (um, Amazon), but those that remain have carved out ...
