NORTH SALEM, N.Y.-The hill outside of the North Salem Middle School cafeteria was covered in trash bags over the weekend. What they held, though, was not trash, but tons of donated clothing and toys collected by the North Salem Athletic Booster Club that will be distributed to those in need across the country.
“We estimate that we had nearly 5,000 pounds of donations,” said Valerie Littenberg, Booster Club president.
Over the weekend, the club encouraged residents to drop off their unused items for its sixth annual clothing and toy drive/fundraiser at the North Salem Middle School cafeteria. The two-day drive garnered hundreds of donation bags which, after being dropped off, were picked up by Clothing Drive Fundraiser/Synergy In-Kind Donation Management Inc., Littenberg said.
In addition to attracting donors via fliers the club sent out, some residents saw the bags as they were entering and exiting the school on other business and later returned with donations of their own. A total of about 15 student volunteers carried donations from donors’ cars to the cafeteria Friday afternoon and back outside and to the distribution truck on Saturday.
