This story was published prior to the Nov. 28 Town Board meeting, at which the board approved changes to the tentative budget and presented the town clerk with the 2018 preliminary budget. Those details, as well as any announced public hearings, will appear in a separate, future article.

NORTH SALEM, N.Y.-The Town Board has spent most of November pouring over Supervisor Warren Lucas’ tentative $9.4 million municipal budget for 2018 and it’s still going.

In its current form, the tentative spending plan calls for a general tax rate increase of 2.5 percent, which is under the tax cap.

The budget comprises the general fund and highway spending plans, which all residents in town pay for. The budget also includes seven district budgets which are paid for by those who live in each specific taxing district. The district budgets include Peach Lake Sewer District, Sunset Ridge, Candlewood and Croton Falls Water districts, the Purdys and Croton Falls lighting district and Candlewood Lake Park district.

“The budget is not yet complete,”  Lucas emphasized. Additionally, changes have been made since he initially presented it to the board Nov. 7, he said.

Another winter to enter into our personal annals, in which we thrived or merely survived.

Soon ...

A Trip to the 'Liberry'

Raise your hand if you didn’t—did not—call the library the “liberry” when you were little. I’m guessing not a lot of hands just went up.

Didn’t just about all of us say “liberry” when we were learning to read? (Well, whaddya expect when a place is named something way too easy for little kids to mispronounce?)

OK. Now, raise your hand if ...

I'm Mrs. Heat Miser

To be perfectly honest, I did not need a large rodent with insomnia to convince me that we had six more weeks of winter. It’s been so cold outside lately that when I go out, my nostrils stick together. The dog is so hesitant to go out that he does his business right on the deck, less than five feet from the door, and then gives me a look of contemptuous indignation when he comes back in the ...

'Bravo' to Column on Trump

February 15, 2018

To the editor,

I am responding to guest columnist Sy Globerman’s article, “Trump is revivifying America” in the Thursday, Feb. 8 edition of your newspaper.

Mr. Globerman is right on target. Bravo to him for stating the facts about President Trump. All we seem to read and hear from the media is Trump bashing.

Therefore, it’s quite refreshing to read about ...
