NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Senior Joan Herlihy is a two-year captain and three-year starter for North Salem volleyball.
When and how did you first get started in volleyball?
I started the summer before seventh grade. I began with camps and continued to play for the school on modified. In eighth grade, I also started to play club for CT Stars, which I have done for five years. I have been on varsity since the end of my freshman year.
What do you enjoy most about playing for North Salem volleyball?
My favorite part of the volleyball season is our Dig Pink match/fundraiser. Every year, we run a car wash and play a game with the intentions of raising money for a breast cancer organization, the Side-Out Foundation. We have raised over $12,000 for the cause since I was a freshman. This year’s game is Oct. 11.
What’s your favorite memory playing volleyball?
Winning our first sectional game last year against Keio.
Who inspires you the most?
My parents inspire me every day because they are the most hardworking and intelligent people I know. I aspire to be as successful as they are in my future endeavors.
What are your plans after high school?
I plan to study neuroscience or cognitive science as and undergraduate and then continue on to medical school to become a development pediatrician or a doctor that works with the mentally handicapped.
How do you get motivated for a match?
Prior to a match, we like to get pumped up listening to music in the locker room or cheering on our JV team.
Favorite place to eat locally?
I have two: Frank’s pizza in Croton Falls and Peach Lake Market.
What’s your favorite place to visit on vacation?
This past summer I went to Europe and visited Paris. That would probably be my favorite vacation spot.
What’s something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?
The first initial of my name along with my sibling’s names spells out Jets: Joan (J), Ellen (E), Timmy (T), and Steven (S).
