NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Lance DeMarzo has been brought on to lead the North Salem girls basketball program.
DeMarzo, a Mahopac resident, began his career in 1981 as Mahopac High School’s JV boys basketball coach. He took over as Mahopac’s varsity coach in 1986, twice leading the Indians to a semifinal appearance. He was named Conference C Coach of the Year in 1987.
He most recently coached at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, a private school in Somers. He served as head coach for the varsity girls’ team from 2012 to 2016, making one semifinal appearance at the County Center. Last year, he was an assistant on the JV and varsity girls’ teams.
Kennedy Catholic played in Section 1 when DeMarzo joined the program but now plays in the Catholic High School Athletic Association.
“When the [North Salem] job opened up,” DeMarzo said, “I said I’d like to get back to running a program and get back into Section 1.”
DeMarzo said he is not guided by one coaching philosophy.
“It all depends on what the kids can do,” he said. “I’m going to attempt to put the kids in situations where they succeed.”
His appointment was approved Wednesday, Oct. 16, by the North Salem Board of Education. DeMarzo thanked the district’s administration for placing their faith in him.
“I’m really excited,” he said. “I’m looking forward to running the program. All I can guarantee at this point is we’re to going play hard, we’re going to play as a team, and we’re going to compete.”
North Salem’s basketball season begins on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
