Somers/North Salem 63 vs. Byram Hills 23
Somers’ wrestling team, which is combined with North Salem this season, started off the campaign with a big upset in the first round of the Section 1 Dual Meet championships.
The team, which was seeded No. 26, defeated No. 7 ranked Byram Hills/Briarcliff/Westlake/Valhalla, 63-23, on Dec. 4 at Somers High School.
“It was a special moment that marked the beginning of a new era for our program,” Coach Ron DiSanto said of the win. “Having a near full lineup and listening to how loud the gym got was great for the sport of wrestling in this town.
“The next generation of kids combined with our returning wrestlers, create a very enthusiastic, exciting group,” DiSanto added. “It was satisfying to see our hard work result in a win, but we know we still have a young team with a lot to learn. The veterans did their job as leaders and our younger kids kept their composure and focus.”
North Salem’s Dominic Barrella then picked up a forfeit victory at 99. North Salem’s Carolyne Barrella earned a victory by pin at 126.

North Salem’s Dominic Barrella (99) picked earned a victory by pin.
“We held our own against Ketcham who is really tough,” DiSanto said. “It was neck and neck until they pulled away toward the end.”
