PATERSON, NJ- A Bloomfield man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with an incident in which a memorial plaque erected to commemorate the 1991 line of duty death of Paterson Firefighter John Nicosia was defaced

The plaque is located at 186 East Main Street, the site of the former Meyer Brothers Department Store, which was gutted by the blaze.

According to a statement by Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale, Daniel Ponce was arrested in his Bloomfield home by members of “E” Squad, namely Detective Sergeants Rob Orzoco, Benny Ramos, and Angel Gonzalez.

“The tireless efforts by the men and women of the Paterson police department are much appreciated in this matter,” Speziale said. “We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters of Paterson‘s bravest.”

When told of the arrest Kyle Hughes, President of FMBA Local 2, the union that represents Paterson’s firefighters, said that “Paterson is on the verge of great and positive change. The days of people thinking they can deface any public areas, especially a memorial to a hero, are over.”

“We are grateful for the Paterson Police Department’s efforts in investigating the incident and apprehending this person who attempted to destroy the memory of one of our fallen brothers.”
