BELLEVILLE, NJ- It took more than 13 minutes of extra play for the Belleville Buccaneers to defeat the Bloomfield Bengals 2-1 in a Super Essex Conference, Liberty Division girl’s varsity soccer game yesterday afternoon (Thursday, September 20).
Bloomfield was looking for their first conference win, but it took double overtime for the Buccaneers to spoil their effort at Clearman Field in Belleville. Krystal Rasczyk netted the game-winning goal at 3:25 into the second extra session.
Belleville’s Lindsey Rivera broke the ice with the games’ first goal at 15:55 into the first half. Bloomfield’s Kayla Silva tied things up at 1-1 scoring at 19:00 into the first half. It remained tied after 80 minutes of regulation play, and through the first 10-minute overtime period.
Belleville goalkeeper Janelle Ramirez had a busy afternoon with 11 saves on 12 shots and stood tall during a sustained Bengal attack in the second half. Bloomfield netminder Grace Carroll made 7 saves on 9 shots.
With the loss, Bloomfield falls to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Coming into yesterday’s contest, Bloomfield hadn’t scored a goal in their prior 3 games, until Silva’s first half score.
Bloomfield’s next game is a non-conference contest at Irvington today (Friday, September 21) at 4 pm, followed by a non-conference game at Millburn on Tuesday, September 25, 4 pm.
In previous action this season, Bloomfield lost to Mount St. Dominic 3-0 on September 17, lost to New Providence 3-0 on September 15, lost to West Essex 3-0 on September 14, lost to Caldwell 6-2 on September 12, defeated Linden 1-0 on September 10, defeated McNair 5-2 on September 8, and lost to Verona 3-2 on September 7.
With the win, Belleville improves 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Their most recent game was a 3-0 conference loss at Nutley on September 17. Nutley is now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Belleville’s next game is a non-conference meeting at East Orange this Saturday, September 22, 10 am.
