NUTLEY, NJ - A backhoe, front end loader, and a vacuum truck were among eight public work vehicles parked in a circle at Nutley’s Municipal Lot No. 1, located behind Philly Pretzel Factory on Saturday, May 5. The trucks were not there for township public-works or storm clean-up but for Nutley children to explore them safely at the annual Big Truck Day.
Kids lined up next to each truck waiting patiently to climb inside, “drive” at the wheel and honk the horns. The children received plastic yellow hard hats to make them look like real workers for the department.
Mayor and Public Works Commissioner Joseph P. Scarpelli said, "Big Truck Day is one of the most enjoyable days of the year. It doesn't get any better than seeing the kid's big smiles and their eyes light up as they climb into one of the Nutley DPW's pieces of equipment."
Other equipment included a John Deere 4x4, jet truck, quad, recycling truck and other smaller trucks. All the trucks were completely safe for the kids to explore. None of the trucks had keys in them, emergency brakes were engaged and all air brakes are emptied.
Jayden Bozza, 5, of Nutley said he liked “driving” the trucks. Brothers Alex, 11, and Cameron Davis, 7, of Nutley enjoyed checking out the big vehicles. Cameron said the jeep was cool. Alex said, “I just like to see all the different kinds of trucks. You can’t see them very often.”
All the DPW employees volunteered for the day to help the children get in and out of the trucks and explain the equipment to them.
Big Truck Day celebrates National Public Works Week every year. Although National Public Works Week - May 20 to 26 is later in the month Nutley holds the event around the first week of May.
