GLEN RIDGE, NJ -- The undefeated Bloomfield Bengals boys varsity basketball team dominated People’s Prep 72-33 Wednesday night and left the Glen Ridge Holiday Tournament with their fifth consecutive win.

After defeating the Glen Ridge Ridgers 57-39 in the tournament’s first round on Tuesday, the Bengals gave the Newark charter school their first loss of the season.

“I didn’t know a whole lot about People’s Prep,” Bengals Head Coach Patrick Brunner said in a post-game interview. “I just kinda talked to our guys about taking care of business, playing hard, worrying about ourselves and I thought we’d be okay.”

Sophomore Michael Ramos made nine field goals and three free throws, leading the Bengals in scoring with 21 points. Senior Myles Toppin and junior Richie Guillaume added 13 points each. Toppin recorded four rebounds, while Guillaume dished out another three.

Sophomore Kevin Mitchell – who scored a field goal and a free throw – gave the Bengals a game-high eight rebounds.

After finishing the 2015-2016 season (9-17, 2-8 SEC), the Bengals have gotten off to a successful start, winning by at least a ten-point margin in the first five games.

“We knew we had a chance to start off good,” Brunner told TAPinto Bloomfield. “We had a tough opening night verse Verona and some winnable games between then and today.”

Guillaume led the Bengals to a 54-44 win in their season opener against Verona. The 6’0 junior recorded a game-high 21 points in addition to four rebounds and two assists. The next day, he scored 19 points and led his team to a 71-34 victory over West Caldwell Tech, with help from Ramos who netted another 17 points.

Ramos scored 19 points in the Bengals’ 57-43 defeat over North 13th Street Tech and a season-high 20 points in round one of the tournament.

“We have most of our team returning, which is why I think we’re off to a good start,” Brunner said. “They a got a little better, a little stronger and it’s paying off.”

The Bengals will visit Newark’s (2-3) North Star Academy Tuesday. The boys will tip off at 4 p.m.
