BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Brookdale Reformed Church Bloomfield is hosting a Solar Seminar tonight at 7 p.m. at the church on Bellevue Avenue. The seminar will discuss how good solar and how little it costs to install.
Pastor Susan Dorward pf Brookdale Reformed told TAPinto Bloomfield that the church has been solar since January of 2016. Built in 1802, it was the first church in Bloomfield to go solar. She told us that "Our tag has been- We were powered by the SON, now we are powered by the Sun too!" - proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
The savings from going solar are more apparent in the summer when the sun is strongest and the skies are brighter. In July 2015, for instance, the church's electric bill was $1600, in July 2016 the bill dropped to $300. Solar energy only provides electricity at this time.
When asked about heating, Dorward explained that the church has an old gas furnace, The congregation is currently raising fund to replace it with a more energy efficient model.
These efforts are all a part of 'Creation Care initiatives. In the future Dorward hopes to make some changes to the church landscape to make the grounds more friendly to bees and butterflies. She explained that they have had problems with gophers and squirrels in the past, but some interesting solutions involving the community are in the works.
The solar seminar will run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Brookdale Reformed Church 16 Bellevue Ave Bloomfield. (that's the church near the Bellevue Avenue entrance of Brookdale Park)'
