NEWARK, NJ - A group of trustees from the Bucco's Rising Stars Foundation made a special delivery for the rising stars at Covenant House in Newark on Thursday Feb. 13. Founder, Carmen Bucco, and members of the foundation's Board of Trustees, delivered a van load of luggage donated by the community.
Carmen Bucco, who spent time in the foster care system as a youth, knows all too well the challenges and instability children in the system face. On top of everything else, when kids move, their only "luggage" is often a trash bag provided by social services.
According to Bucco, one of his board members heard of a nurse in San Francisco who collected suitcases for foster care children who visited her hospital. A suitcase provides a sense of stability because it is "theirs" and all of their belonging can be transported and held securely.
Bucco liked the idea and asked a few friends for their old suitcases, and they told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on. By the time of the delivery on Feb. 13, Bucco's Mercedes van was filled with luggage.
Covenant House was chosen for the donation because many of the youth helped by the organization were in the foster care system until they aged out.
Buccos Rising Stars, is a foundation dedicated to helping 'rising stars' in the foster care system transition to adulthood.
TAPinto Nutley will continue to report on the relationship between Bucco's Rising Stars and Covenant House, as well as developments in the foundation.
