CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove police arrested two suspects on Monday on burglary charges after a brief foot chase.
Around 1 p.m. police were alerted by an insurance company that a stolen vehicle was being tracked in the area of 100 Ridge Rd. Officers responded to the area and began searching for the car. According to police reports, Officer Rivers saw the suspect vehicle parked in the driveway of 88 Ridge Rd.
The vehicle was occupied by Christine Garabato, 22, of Brooklyn, NY and Andy Rivera, 43, of Kearny was loading boxes into the trunk according to police. Officer Rivers approached the man who briefly tried to explain what he was doing before fleeing on foot into the residence, locking the door behind him. Lt. Kennedy arrived and ran to the opposite side of teh house where he found the man climbing out of a window.
Police said the subject slipped back into the house. Officers from Verona and Little Falls arrived to assist and a perimeter was set up. Officers forced their way into the residence where they found Rivera hiding under a futon. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen out of Nutley the day before and the male was in the process of burglarizing the residence. Garabato was wanted by the Essex County Sheriff’s Dept. and was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia then transferred to the custody of Essex County Sheriff’s Dept. Rivera was also wanted. He suffered a medical episode while being charged and was transported to an area hospital awaiting clearance for admission to Essex County Jail.
All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
