NUTLEY, NJ - Nutley Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petraco and Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo urge residents to be mindful of scammers after the arrest of a suspect in connection with a diversion burglary on Grant Ave.

In April, two men approached a Grant Ave. resident about masonry work. The resident allowed one of the men into her home to discuss the project. At the same time the other individual entered the home and stole cash from her handbag.

Surveillance captured a late model Ford pick up truck near the home at the time of the incident. That information was shared with other departments. It was discovered that the same vehicle was responsible for diversion burglaries in Kearny, Perth Amboy and Newark. Working with other departments, police were able to determine that Tony Eli of Newark was the person they were looking for. Union Police made the arrest after Eli bailed out of the truck in question while being chased by police. He was charged for burglaries in multiple communities including Nutley.

Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco said "This is nothing new, these scammers prey on our seniors and take advantage of the vulnerable. We had incidents last year and they too, were arrested and charged." Chief Thomas Strumolo said the cooperation between Newark, Kearny and Union was outstanding and commended all departments including the Real Time Crime Center for their assistance.

Strumolo continues to urge residents to be mindful that these people are out there and will take advantage if you allow them to. He reminds residents to call police if something appears to be suspicious. is a member of the New Jersey Press Association, and is the only locally owned news organization serving the community.
