NUTLEY, NJ - Nutley children hunted day and night for colorful eggs to fill their baskets Saturday, March 31. Nutley’s 83rd annual Easter Egg Hunt hosted this year by the Nutley FMBA Local 44 was held in the Memorial Park 1, also known as, the “Mud Hole” early in the morning. The 12th annual Nutley Township Great Flashlight Egg Hunt sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department was held at Reinheimer Park as soon as dusk hit.
The sun was shining through the clouds for this year’s Easter Egg Hunt as the kids gathered with their parents in the Mud Hole. Two-year olds and younger were able to meet the Easter bunnies. Cheryl DiAntonio and Lucy Collini, members of the Civic Celebrations Committee, were standing under a tree ready to meet children and hand them an egg. Children of all ages gathered after the hunt to snag a photo with the “famous in a small town” bunnies.
The annual event is split in half with 6-8 year olds at the Mud Hole and across the street in the second part of the park the children hunted in three ages groups - 5 year olds first, 4 year olds hunted next and 3 year olds were last.
Due to rain the township’s Great Flashlight Egg Hunt was rescheduled for the same night as the morning hunt. Two hunts in one day didn’t seem to bother any of the children, who were more than anxious to hunt for eggs and even more excited to search for the golden egg that night.
One lucky kid who finds the golden egg wins a giant basket full with candy including a chocolate bunny at the nighttime hunt. Spring Garden School sixth grader Mia Durham said she found it over the hill in the leaves.
Durham didn’t plan on attending the annual hunt and wasn’t intending on going if it was held on the original night. “My friend made me go,” she said happily. She said she will split the basket with her friend Madison Zeller, 12, and her brother Brian.
