Numbers Remain High on New Coronavirus Cases, Hospitalizations, Testing

TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey’s COVID-19 public health emergency has been extended for another 30 days, “as we battle this virus through the second wave that has enveloped our nation and our state,” said Gov. Phil Murphy in making the announcement on November 22.

The extension — the ninth consecutive declared by Murphy since the pandemic struck in March — came on a day when the state had 3,998 new positive cases for a cumulative total of 306,007 cases.

There also were 15 new confirmed deaths, bringing the statewide total to nearly 14,949 lives lost related to the coronavirus. According to the state's COVID dashboard, the positivity rate is now up to 1.35, higher than the target rate of 1.0, where it was for much of the summer. 

There are now 2,693 hospitalized patients due to the virus, including 537 in the intensive care unit and 240 requiring ventilators, while 247 persons were discharged. In addition, more than 5.6 million PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests have been performed,

“As we approach the holidays, protect yourself and your loved ones,” Murphy tweeted. “Wear a mask. Social distance. Avoid large gatherings.”

Originally declared on March 9, the executive order declaring a public health emergency was previously extended on April 7, May 6, June 4, July 2, August 1 and August 27, September 25 and October 24.

Executive Order 200 extends all executive orders issued under the governor’s authority under the Emergency Health Powers Act. It also extends all actions taken by any executive branch departments and agencies in response to the public health emergency presented by the COVID-19 outbreak, according to the governor's office.

In Monmouth County on November 22, there were 288 new positive cases of COVID-19 — the seventh highest total of all 21 counties — and no new deaths related to COVID-19.
