Dear Fellow Nutley Residents,

As I write this my sincere hope is that you and yours are well. My thoughts are with those who are ill and all the amazing individuals in the medical and research communities who are working tirelessly to treat the sick and eradicate this virus.

My name is Maria Hamlin and my family and I have lived in Nutley for over 16 years. I am a retired Nutley Police Officer, Veteran, and Chief Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force. I am currently seeking a position as a Commissioner in our upcoming township municipal
election on May 12, 2020.

While I know this election may not be top of mind right now, I know our shared community is. I have never been more proud to call Nutley home. Amid this crisis, so many heroic individuals – representing businesses, government agencies, and non-profit entities, are tending to the most vulnerable among us.

Because you probably now have more reading time during this time, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and tell you about my background and what I hope to bring to our community through public service. My experience in the military and the police department were characterized by identifying challenges and working with a team to execute reasonable and effective solutions. I intend to bring this approach of teamwork and inclusion to my role as Commissioner, because I understand that the success of our township is dependent upon everyone working together. I will work closely with my fellow commissioners to listen to the concerns of all Nutley residents. As an active member of our community, I have a profound sense of pride in Nutley and will help preserve and enhance the true quality and charm of our community.

When my husband and I moved to Nutley, we loved the sense of community we felt, even as we were searching for our dream home. We immediately fell in love with our home as well as the neighborhood, and have been raising our children here ever since. Our children attend Nutley Schools and are actively involved in the athletics, theatre, and arts programs in town.

As an active member of the community, I have supported numerous town wide initiatives and have been a township basketball coach for over 10 years. I am honored to serve as a board member of the Nutley Veterans of Foreign War Post #493, and as a member of the Nutley Irish American Association.

I am running for Nutley Commissioner because I want to help build the safest and brightest possible future for our children and our community. I want to ensure that every decision made by the Commissioners is made with Nutley resident’s best interests in mind. It is my desire to ensure that, as Nutley moves ahead, it remains a place our families will want to continue to call home for many years to come. As a township, we have many challenges ahead of us. I pledge to work with community leaders to put Nutley residents' interests first. I will work to hold the line on taxes, thoughtfully improve our downtown area and partner with the Board of Education to create safe and thriving schools for our community.

For us to be successful, we need a local government comprised of transparent leaders and effective communicators, which are both essential pillars of my campaign. We need everyone to feel welcome, whether you’ve been blessed to call Nutley your home your entire life, or if you’ve recently become part of our community.

I have faithfully and proudly served our country and our community in multiple capacities. My new mission is to integrate my experience as a veteran, law enforcement officer, coach and mother to serve Nutley as a Commissioner. I bring a style of leadership that will move Nutley forward and will allow us to work together to build a sustainable plan for years to come. I feel called to stand up again and serve in this new, honorable capacity. Please join me and together we can make Nutley a stronger thriving community for years to come.

On May 12, 2020, I ask that you cast one of your votes for me, #3 on the ballot, Maria Hamlin.
