NUTLEY, NJ - Sophomore Kevin Hogan launched a two-out, solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a two-run rally that lifted No. 2 seed Nutley over seventh-seeded Chatham, 4-3, on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 state baseball tournament played at the Oval.
Chatham center fielder Tyler Brock raced back to the fence in left-center and leaned over the fence in an attempt to rob Hogan, but he couldn't bring the ball back as it glanced off his glove for the game-ending home run. It was Hogan's second home run of the season and his mother greeted him with a promise of a steak dinner for his heroic feat.
Chatham (16-8) led, 3-2, with one out in the bottom of the seventh before Marty Higgins connected with a 1-2 pitch for his fifth homer of the season for Nutley (20-8). One out later, Hogan ended it with his drive to the cement bleachers in left center.
Higgins, who came on in relief to pitch the top of the seventh, improved his mound record to 4-1 with the win.
