Nutley’s government needs to be more transparent. Nutley’s residents and taxpayers deserve to know that the decisions being made by our leaders are being made in the best interests of the town. To accomplish this, I am proposing:

Make our leaders and meetings more accessible

In my candidate statement I wrote two weeks ago about civic engagement, How Nutley can promote civic engagement, I proposed that we need to Live Stream our commissioner meetings as well as host quarterly town hall style meetings.

Sign Up for Nutley Newsletter
Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

By live-streaming our commissioner meetings, we would be giving our residents more opportunities to see the commissioner meetings as they occur. We should also allow for questions to be submitted online so that the home viewers can participate just as if they were attending the meeting in person.

Holding quarterly town hall meetings, we would be providing an informal setting that is solely for the residents to engage their leaders and ask those questions they might have.

Put property purchases on the Commissioner meeting agenda before purchase

Anytime our commissioners intend on purchasing a property, our commissioners need to put the proposed purchase on the agenda for regularly scheduled commissioner meetings in order for residents to be able to provide input as well as hear the rationale behind such a purchase. Residents should not have to wonder why such a large expenditure was made and rely on trust in our leaders that the reasons behind such a purchase was in fact in our best interests.

Release executive session meeting minutes

If our leaders have nothing to hide, then there is no reason why the meeting minutes from the commissioners’ executive sessions should not be released. This would bring the highest level of transparency we could bring to our local government as we would get to see the rationale and debate behind the decisions being made for our community.
