WEST ORANGE, NJ – After recording their first two wins of the season and suffering a tough loss to Madison on Wednesday, the Nutley Raiders ice hockey team dropped their Thursday night game 3-1 to the Pascack Valley Indians.

The Raiders defeated the Newark East Side Red Raiders 6-0 on December 22. Goals were scored by Ryan O’Mara, Dan Caputo, Gerard LaFiura, Mark Frade and Matt Jaworski.

Freshman goalie Johnny Matrona made 10 saves against the Red Raiders.

Nutley’s first win came easy, as the Red Raiders currently play in a lower division and are still a developing program.

“We were able to just use our systems to the best of our ability and get the right goals,” Head Coach Andrew Surowiec told TAPinto Nutley.

In their next game, the Raiders visited Verona and left with a 3-2 victory.

Caputo netted two goals and assisted Andrew Spitalnik’s game-winning goal 11 seconds before the final buzzer.

Raiders senior goalie Tim Spitalnik saved the puck 16 times.

After the two wins, the Raiders had to make it through their next two games with only 12 players, due to injuries, sickness, and participation in the travel team tournament.

After Spitalnik recorded 25 saves against the Madison Dodgers Wednesday night, his team lost 4-0.

On Thursday night, Jaworksi scored the first goal of the game in the first period with an assist from O’Mara.

While the Raiders took 37 shots, they were not able to score another goal.

“It’s not a matter of us not getting the puck out there,” Surowiec said. “It’s just that we couldn’t get it in.”

Their opponent only took 15 shots, but took very good ones on the three goals.

“The three goals that they had were just good shots,” Surowiec told TAPinto Nutley. “I don’t fault them against that.”

The Indians’ first goal came from senior Luke Ciocca and senior Trent Shanley scored the last two.

Raiders senior goalie Emily Render made 12 saves, while Indians junior goalie Stephen Brennan recorded 36.

“I definitely think that we probably could have controlled the game even more in the second and third period if we had actually worked a little harder,” Surowiec said.

Standing at (2-6-1), the Raiders will host the (7-0-1) Johnson Crusaders on Monday. The two teams will face off at 6:15 PM.
