NUTLEY, NJ - With opening curtain just days away all hands were on deck during the weekend for the official start of tech week for Shrek The Musical JR. The Nutley Parks and Recreation production will have two 7:30 evening performances Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9. Additionally there is a 2:00 p.m. matinee performance, Sunday June 10 in the Nutley High School Auditorium.
The set needed final build, painting and finishing touches. Stage Manager, Anne Bertasso, had an ample support team for lighting, sound and scene changes. Though on-site for a full 8 hour day, cast members arrived eager to combine months of preparation with the culmination of the behind the scenes activities. First stop was hair and make-up, with several students stepping-up to help their peers. Other volunteers assisted with costumes and all that goes into a stage production’s opening night.
With quite some time before the first cue was called, the cast of local Nutley students, prepped for official head shots in full costume. Waiting for some of the technical components to be addressed students studied, ate, or just enjoyed time with friends.
Kaitlyn Gibney, a fifth grader, shared rehearsing is long “but I get to spend time with my friends.” Shrek The Musical JR. is seventh grader Tayler Panzer’s third show. She shared that after seeing her friend Noella in her first production, she too wanted to give it a try. She went on to say she is still learning however everyone is kind and encouraging.
At least one student shared that the Department of Nutley Parks & Recreation drama program provides an opportunity that would otherwise be financially out of reach. Some of the more experienced cast members look forward to taking the skills they are learning within community theater to college drama and eventually the professional stage. Others just enjoy being a part of something fun.
Though auditions, months of rehearsals and long hours of tech week may sound more like work than fun, the level of excitement from cast and crew appears to only grow as opening night approaches. Seventh grader Samantha Schley summed it up by sharing “it’s long but when it all comes together, it’s worth it!”
