MONTCLAIR, NJ - A fallen tree entrapped a driver in Glen Ridge on Tuesday evening, Montclair Township officials say.
The Montclair Fire Department (MFD) indicated that they responded to the call at 5:02 p.m. reporting a fallen tree on top of a car with someone was trapped inside.
MFD’s Battalion 3, Truck 1, Engine 1 and Engine 3 responded to the scene at High Street just off Bloomfield Avenue in Glen Ridge.
When units arrived, the Montclair Fire Department stated that they discovered that a large tree had fallen on top of a Volkswagen Jetta, collapsing the vehicle around the occupant.
In order to gain access to the vehicle, firefighters first used chainsaws to remove sections of the tree, followed by hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to spread and cut the vehicle away from the occupant. According the published reports, a hydraulic ram was used to lift the tree high enough to raise the car dashboard and free the occupant’s legs pinned beneath.
The driver was stabilized and transported to the hospital by the Glen Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Unit.
