Held in one of the arts capitals of NJ, it's an all-day outdoor festival in beautiful Nishuane Park.  With help from some major sponsors, it’s free -- no tickets required to spend the whole day experiencing this great music.  It’s important to us to keep the tradition of jazz alive and accessible to everyone.   And this isn’t just a little local music fest – crowds of 10,000+ park their chairs for the day to hear world class jazz artists (personally selected by Christian McBride) perform on stage from noon to 9pm.

What makes the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST unique are the incredible emerging musicians performing. More than 150 students ages 8 to 18 studying at the JAZZ HOUSE this summer perform in eight blow-away ensembles and big bands. That all circles back to the mission of JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, where they get kids off the sidelines, give them a seat in the band and access to world-class music education, no matter what their backgrounds.

Since 2012, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has worked with more than 50,000 students who have performed before half a million people.  Its students have performed alongside music legends like Jack DeJohnette, Wynton Marsalis, Esperanza Spalding and many more. They  have nearly a 100% success rate launching high schoolers to higher studies at places like Juilliard, Princeton, Oberlin, Manhattan College of Music and more. And these student musicians all found their jazz chops at JAZZ HOUSE KiDS.  Check out this short video and take a look at its year-round programs in the schools, at the Montclair Jazz House and in the community  --

Back to the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST on August 11 -- This year it's bringing back actor S. Epatha Merkerson as master of ceremonies, and jazz great Eddie Palmieri as headliner - playing with his Afro Caribbean jazz sextet. We also have Oliver Lake Trio 3 and The Royal Bopsters among the 30+ acts during the day/evening.  All the program details are here: https://www.montclairjazzfestival.org

The festival is really a two-week music fest, with daily performances at Montclair State University, live streamed globally for all to see. Christian McBride is kicking off the event this Friday, July 27 as my alter ego, DJ Brother Mister (as  Mr. James Brown called him) spinning for a soul & funk dance party. Details are here: https://www.montclairjazzfestival.org/dj-brother-mister
