NUTLEY, NJ- Nutley American toppled Bloomfield 13-8 to remain undefeated in their last pool-play game of the 12-year-old District 8 Little League Tournament tonight at Nutley American Field.
Both teams were 3-0 heading into tonight, as Bloomfield lead Pool A, while Nutley American was atop Pool B. Neither team had even surrendered a run this postseason. Something had to give in this heavyweight contest.
Nutley American maintained a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the 3rd inning when first-baseman Kevin Jiratatprasot ripped a line-drive up the middle to increase the lead to 7-3.
Bloomfield answered back with a run in the top of the 4th to close the gap to 7-4, but Nutley American went on a rampage in the bottom of the frame scoring 5 runs on 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 errors to lead 12-4.
Nutley American notched another run in the bottom of the 5th to extend the lead to 13-4, but the high-powered Bloomfield offense would not go down without a fight. They scored 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, until Jiratatprasot came in to close the door and notch the final two outs, ending the game at 13-8.
Nutley American is undefeated at 4-0 in the tournament. American previously defeated Livingston 6-0 on Saturday, June 23; Belleville 10-0 on Thursday, June 28; and Nutley East 2-0 on Saturday, June 30.
With the loss, Bloomfield falls to 3-1, but are the top seed in Pool A. They previously defeated Caldwell 24-0 on Saturday, June 23; Ironbound 23-0 on Thursday, June 28; and North Ward 6-0 on Sunday, July 1.
Nutley American and Bloomfield meet again in the District 8 Championship this Monday, July 9, 6 pm at Nutley American Field.
Meanwhile, Nutley East played host to North Ward of Newark and pulled out a win in their final at bat, 7-3.
Nutley East picked up a run in the 1st inning and two runs in the 3rd inning to lead 3-0. North Ward rallied with three runs in the bottom of the 5th to knot the game 3-3.
The final frame saw Nutley East pull ahead with a Michael Zitola two-RBI double. Zitola also started the game on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings.
With the victory, Nutley East finishes at 3-1, with previous wins over Belleville 2-1 on Friday, June 22, and Livingston 5-4 on Monday, June 25. Their only loss was the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Nutley American this past Saturday, which left them second behind Nutley American in Pool B and out of the Finals.
To update the 10-year-old District 8 Tournament, Nutley American sits atop the standings at 3-0 in pool-play, with victories over North Ward 11-1 on Sunday, June 24; Ironbound 10-0 on Thursday, June 28; and Nutley East 13-2 on Monday, July 2.
Nutley American’s fourth and final pool-play game is against Caldwell at Ironbound Field in Newark this Saturday, July 7, 5 pm.
Nutley East’s finished their four games in pool-play at 2-2. East defeated North Ward 18-3 on Monday, June 25; lost to Livingston 16-0 on Wednesday, June 27; defeated Belleville 16-7 on Friday, June 29; and lost to Nutley American 13-2 this past Monday.
After pool-play concludes, the top two teams meet in the Finals on Wednesday, July 11, 6 pm in Livingston.
