NUTLEY, NJ - Horns blared loudly from every angle of Municipal Lot #1 as excited children and their parents and grandparents waited their turns to hop into a Department of Public Works vehicle during Nutley’s annual 'Big Truck Day'.

DPW employees were on hand to assist the children with the trucks and answer any questions they may have about them. The fleet of vehicles consisted of sewer truck, recycling truck, salter, bucket loader, backhoe, wheel loader, dump truck and a John Deere 16 200cx loader explained DPW employee Mike Pontoriero.

Mayor and Public Works Commissioner Joseph P. Scarpelli explained that all the trucks at the event are safe for the children to climb on.  There are no keys in any of the trucks, all air brakes are emptied and emergency brakes engaged. “The kids love it, they can climb in the trucks, blare on the horns and we can show off our equipment. When you see a smile on a little kid’s face, it’s the best feeling in the world,” said Scarpelli.

The Andrascik and Rodriguez families of Nutley enjoyed the afternoon at the free event.  Three-year-old twins Zack and Will Andrascik and their friend Christian Rodriguez, also age 3, climbed into truck after truck together, honking horns and sharing laughs. “I think it’s great, the little boys love the trucks; this is their happy place. They will be talking about this all day,” said parent Crissy Andrascik.

While boys and girls explored the trucks they were also able to decorate their free plastic hard hats with related stickers and put on vests to take a construction worker photo at the selfie station the DPW department set up for them. “Nutley does so many wonderful things for the children. I am also impressed how well maintained all the trucks are,” said resident Donnie Myers, as his two children were suiting up for a selfie. is an online newspaper serving the Township of Nutley. is accredited by the New Jersey Press Association, and is the only locally owned news organization serving the community.
