Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) was started in the early part of the 20th Century, before the social safety net programs like Social Security, were created. Social Security was created as a part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'New Deal.' NFSB is first and foremost a mental health organization offering everything from couples therapy, teen counseling, group therapy, and more. Sales from the thrift shop provided funds to support those programs, all while offering very affordable clothing and home goods to the community.
When the Red Cross left town, NFSB took over their food pantry operation at 169 Chestnut St. That operation now serves close to 200 households in Nutley, with the majority being senior citizens, veterans, surviving spouses of veterans, the disabled, and other Nutley residents facing food insecurity.
As use of the food pantry grew, the purpose of the Thrift Shop evolved. Funds generated by thrift shop sales continue to supoort NFSB programs, but also support the purchase fresh and frozen food for the food pantry. In 2018, the Township of Nutley cut their support for NFSB by $40,000 to just $25,000 for the year. The township contribution for 2019 is not immediately known.
Earlier this month, NFSB moved the Thrift Shop into the 169 Chestnut St. building after extensive renovations, funded largley by grants and private contributions. The "new" thrift shop has a boutique feel to it. Everyone is welcome to shop at the thrift shop, and with donations arriving every day, some with tags, new merchandize hits the sales floor every week.
