Fraud/Identity Theft – The victim told Officers that they received a call from a party claiming to be from Social Security and a second call which displayed “Nutley Police.” That caller stated that they observed suspicious activity using their social security number and was suspected of money laundering. They were given a case number and asked personal information questions that the victim provided. The caller advised the victim to withdraw money from their account to which the victim replied they would need more proof of who they were speaking with. Police were then contacted. The victim was advised they could be entered as an Identity Theft Victim to which they agreed. They were also advised to contact their financial institutions, the three credit agencies, and the Social Security Administration to advise them of the incident.
Criminal Mischief – East Centre Street – Response was made to the area in regards to a report of criminal mischief. The victim stated that they returned to their parked vehicle and noticed that a screw was inserted into the side of their tire causing it to deflate slowly.
Fraud – Headquarters received a walk in report regarding fraud. The victim told Officers that they lost their cellphone and case containing their license and bank card. Upon inspecting their checking account, they found a fraudulent withdrawal for $3,100.00 from their financial institution’s Nutley branch.
Motor Vehicle Investigation – Hancox Avenue – A motor vehicle investigation resulted in the arrest of Varghese Chandy, 54, of Belleville. He was transported to Headquarters, charged with Obstruction of Administration of Law, which was placed on a summons with a mandatory Court date. Additionally, Mr. Chandy was issued five (5) traffic summonses for: Failure to yield to emergency vehicles, Park When Closed, DWI, Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test, and Consent to Take Samples of Breath, all with a mandatory Court date which was provided to him upon release.
Motor Vehicle Theft – Harrison Street – Officers responded to the area regarding a past occurred motor vehicle theft. The victim stated that they noticed their car keys missing last night from where they placed them upon coming home and thought they misplaced them while in the home. At that time, the vehicle was still in the driveway, Detectives investigating located the vehicle in Bloomfield and charged a 15 y/o with the theft.
Harassment – Ridge Road – Police were directed to the area in regards to a past occurred harassment. The homeowner stated that earlier an unknown male placed an orange traffic cone on their front stairs and yelled out obscenities to the homeowner.
Theft/Burglary – Brookfield Avenue – Officers responded to the area in regard to a past occurred incident. The homeowner stated that on Tuesday at approximately 3:55pm a grey Chevy Silverado parked across the street from their home. A male party walked to the backdoor and entered their house. The male actor was confronted by the workers on premises and left. As he was leaving he took a small pipe (possibly copper), put it in his truck and drove off.
Package Theft- Bloomfield Ave- Police are investigating a call in which the resident reported a package stolen from their front porch. The resident provided police with a description of actor, who fled in a white vehicle. Police are investigating.
