NUTLEY, NJ - A Nutley resident was charged with aggravated assault after a dispute in the area of High St. and Franklin Ave.  near the end of a Board of Education election victory party.

According to reports from the Nutley Police Department, police were called to the area of High St. and Franklin Ave Nov. 5 regarding a dispute. TAPinto Nutley confirmed that a unit from the Nutley Volunteer and Emergency Rescue Squad was also dispatched to the scene. 

Jim Dandy's, the bar and restaurant located at the corner of High St. and Franklin Ave., was hosting the victory party of Nutley Board of Education Trustee Frank DeMaio at the time of the incident.  After collecting information and statements, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office approved charges of Aggravated Assault against Gemma Abernovich, 48, of Nutley.

Abernovich, a Nutley High School class of 1989 graduate, is a life-long Nutley resident.During the election cycle, Abernovich identified herself as the campaign manager for the three individuals running as challengers in the school board race. She has a court day of Dec. 26 in Newark.
