August 28, 2017

Dear Nutley Staff, Parents and Community,

Sign Up for E-News

As the summer comes to a close, I want to take a moment and welcome you back to the 2017-2018 school year.

I am thrilled to welcome teachers back to the district on Tuesday, September 5 and students on Wednesday, September 6. Wednesday and Thursday, September 6 and 7 are half days for all students. Friday, September 8 will be a full day of classes for students.

We have many things to be excited about this school year. After several years of research and planning, Nutley High School will implement the Rotating Drop Schedule. Classes will rotate daily and meet for 56-minute periods, an optimal amount of time for learning. All of Nutley High School will have a common lunch hour, allowing time for science labs, extra-curricular activities and extra help for students. I want to thank the NHS administration, Mr. Williams, Mrs. Devore and Mr. Materia, and our Director of Curriculum 6-12, Mr. Kent Bania, as well as the entire high school instructional team for all their hard work to implement this schedule, offering our students an exceptional education experience. I also want to thank the Township of Nutley and our Board of Education for all their support during this process.

Also, at our July 24 Board of Education meeting, our administrative team presented the progress of the five-year Strategic Plan, which was developed in 2012 and ran through June 2017. We will embark on the development of a new multi-year Strategic Plan to continue to build upon the good work of our staff and students. I hope to have more information on dates and community involvement in the fall. You can see the presentation on the Strategic Plan here.

As you are also aware, our schools are at capacity at every level. I hope you were able to attend one of our Town Hall Meetings or small group discussions on this topic last winter. We continue to strive to offer the children of Nutley the best education possible. We will continue our discussion of putting a referendum out to the community to support our efforts to relieve the overcrowding and enhance our instructional programs. I encourage you to attend our first Board of Education meeting of the school year to hear more details and information. Our first meeting of the 2017-2018 school year will be held at JHWMS on Monday, September 11 at 6:30pm.

I look forward to seeing parents and staff at our Open Houses this September. Elementary schools will host their sessions on Tuesday, September 19. The middle school and high school will hold their sessions Wednesday, September 13 and Thursday, September 28 respectively. All Open Houses will be in the evening and more details will follow from the schools’ principals. Spring Garden will hold its 100-year celebration on Sunday, October 1. Details on this exciting event will be forthcoming. Please enjoy these last few moments of summer vacation with your families and friends. I will look forward to seeing staff and students after Labor Day.
