NUTLEY, NJ - Just moments before Nutley's annual American Cancer Society 'Relay for Life' start, the 'Pink Flamigos' flew past the $7,000 mark to become the top fundraising team for 2017.

The "Nutley RFL Pink Flamingos" are one of the dozens of teams working to raise funds to support the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The relay takes place overnight tonight (May 19) in De Muro Park. Fundraising projects take place in the months prior to tonight's main event, and many more will be taking place tonight as well.

While 'Relay for Life' isn't really a competition, the idea of the fundraising leader board does motivate team members, and their supporters, to raise funds in the fight against cancer.

The Flamingos get their name from the unique fundraiser: flocking local lawns with flamingos.  For $25, Nutley RFL Pink Flamingos "flocked" the lawn of a neighbor or friend in Nutley.Trained specialists gathered a flock of flamingos and "flamingo" the lawn under cover of night. Details about arranging a flocking can be found on the Nutley RFL Pink Flamingos Facebook page. Flocking season for 2017 have ended, but a high ranking flamingo-ologist has passed along confidential information to TAPinto Nutley suggesting that the flock will grow substantially for next year's relay.

As the schedule of 'flockings' filled up, the team held a special fundraising night at Pinot's Palette on Franklin Avenue. That night of fun raised over $500 for the American Cancer Society.

As the search for a cure for cancer continues, members of community can continue to make donations even through the Relay for Life has started. Donations can be made directly on the Pink Flamingos 'Relay for Life' page. The team has already raised $7120 for the American Cancer Society and hope to raise more before sunrise.
