Relay is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around the DeMuro Park track throughout the evening.  Each team is always asked to have a member on the track to signify that cancer never rests.

“Relay always holds a special place in my heart and every year in unique, but the thirteenth holds special meaning to me personally and the reason I relay,” said Heather Soto, who returns this year as event chairperson.  “Relay has become an extended part of my family through the years and what I love most is our survivors and the genuine appreciation they always have.”

Relay is a fun night for all ages as each team sets up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by collecting donations from food, goods, games and activities.  The money will count towards their overall team fundraising goal.

In the townships’ quest to help end cancer, the organization has raised over $1.23M since the Nutley chapter began in 2007.  Relay For Life began nationally in 1985 and is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries.

Residents are invited to attend the official Relay Kickoff Celebration on Thursday, February 7, 2019, 6:30 pm at Parks and Recreation Center.  It’s free of charge, open to the public, and includes dinner and live entertainment.

Three popular annual fundraising events have been announced leading up to Relay, with each function taking place at the Parks and Recreation Center.

First, the magical Princess Ball is set for Thursday, November 8, 6 pm, where fairy tales come to life as children - dressed as their favorite prince or princess - encounter characters from their favorite stories.

“Imaginative play is an integral part of social and emotional development,” added Commissioner Tucci.  “Children use imaginative play to work out every day emotions and give us a small glimpse into the window of their world.”

Next up is the Pasta Bingo Night Fundraiser, slated for Friday, November 16, 6:30 pm.  The final fundraiser leading up to Relay is the family-friendly IWF Wrestling Event with WWE Hall of Famers and WrestleMania Legends on Saturday, April 13, 2019, 7:30 pm.

Members from Nutley Relay for Life recently participated at Rotary Club Classic Car Show on September 12, Fall Festival in the Park on September 30, Pediatric Cancer Awareness Walk on September 30 at Oakeside Cultural Center in Bloomfield, and Nutley Thriving Survivors Candlelight Celebration Walk on October 5.

Tucci concluded, “we will never give up, we will continue the fight together and the Township of Nutley will not stop until we find a cure.”
