Violin virtuoso Lara St. John and classical/jazz pianist Matt Herskowitz will grace the stage at St. Paul’s, Westfield, on Sunday, November 17 at 5pm

Violin virtuoso Lara St. John is the featured artist in this year’s Second Steeple Concert at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.  She will be joined by classically trained jazz pianist Matt Herskowitz. Lara St. John, a violin prodigy since the age of two, is known for her interest in the folk and traditional music of  Eastern Europe.  She is also celebrated for her prodigious performances of music by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Schubert, among others.

Pianist, composer, and arranger Matt Herskowitz is, like St. John, an imaginative, proficient, prodigious solo and collaborative performer and recording artist who has put his musical stamp on the works of  many composers.  His interest in Eastern European, Jewish and Arabic folk and traditional music aligns existentially with St. John’s and has served as a catalyst to their joint development of fresh, inspired musical ideas, rhythms and overlays that feed on a hybrid classical/jazz vibe.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church is located at 414 E. Broad Street (near Euclid Ave.) in Westfield.  Concert tickets at the door are $25 (adult) and $10 (student).  Tickets can also be purchased online at www.steepleconcerts.org.  Following the concert, all are invited to meet the artists at a reception in the church narthex.  The Steeple Concert series is presented by the Friends of Music at St. Paul’s, a 501(c)3 organization devoted to presenting the arts in Westfield.

On the Other Side of the Border

November 10, 2019

The children kept hugging us. They just wanted hugs. They wanted to be seen, to be loved, to feel safe. It’s odd — we teach our children to not talk to strangers, and yet when we entered the Shelter de Leona Vicario they ran to us, grabbed our hands, and wanted to play. My Spanish is limited and their English was non-existent, but they kept telling us their names and ...

And of course, horror is meant to scare us. Though we normally like to avoid the dark side of life, we can’t deny we’re interested in discovering what ...
