NUTLEY, NJ - The annual celebration of Italian Heritage Month is set for Sunday, Oct. 11. The Nutley-Belleville Columbus Day Parade and Italian Heritage Committee made some changes for 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, but the flag ceremonies will prevail, followed by a special procession of motor vehicles. 

The celebration will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sun. Oct. 11 with the annual flag raising at Belleville Town Hall. Sponsored by the Nutley-Belleville Columbus Day Parade and Italian Heritage Committee, the Belleville Chapter of UNICO, and the Federation of Italian American Societies of New Jersey, the flag raising will include dignitaries from the Italian Consulate and renowned singer Jerry Pearce will sing the Italian and American national anthems.

At 11 a.m., the Nutley chapter of UNICO International will hold their traditional wreath laying at the Columbus monument at Nutley Township Hall, on Kennedy Dr.

Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the traditional Nutley-Belleville Columbus Day and Italian Heritage Month Parade is canceled. It its place, a caravan of cars will follow the usual parade route.

Cars will line up at Belleville High School at noon. The vehicles will travel west on Joralemon St. then turn at Franklin Ave. and proceed North to Nutley Center. It will end at the Columbus Monument at Township Hall.
