NUTLEY, NJ – It was a night of creativity, ingenuity and excitement during the annual Nutley Cub Scout Pack 141 Pinewood Derby on Friday, January 31 at John H. Walker Middle School in Nutley.

The Pinewood Derby is a yearly racing event for unpowered, unmanned miniature cars.  With the assistance of parents and adults, the Nutley Scouts built their own cars from wood – mostly from kits containing a block of pine wood, plastic wheels and metal axles.

The derby cars convert gravitational energy into translational kinetic energy, and that along with rotational energy equals speed.  Wheel alignment is important both to minimize wheel contact with the axle head and body and to limit the contact between the wheels and guide rail as the car travels down the track.

After some furious competition between the boys in grades one through five, prize trophies were awarded to the first, second and third place winners.

Taking home the first place trophy was Auyush Patel.  Second place went to Daniel Kielblock Jr., while third place honors were awarded to Matty Richards.  Pack Chairman Walt Smith and Cubmaster Joann Kielblock presented the trophies to the standout scouts.

“Some of these kids have been scouts for many years and this is one event they will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Walt Smith during his opening remarks to the gathering.

Pinewood derbies are often run by chapters of the Cub Scouts program of Boy Scouts of America.  The first derby was held in 1953 at the Scout House in Manhattan Beach, California by Cub Scout Pack 280C, now Pack 713.  The concept was created by the Pack's Cubmaster Don Murphy and sponsored by the Management Club at North American Aviation.

Event supporters included BSI General Contracting, Gaynor Transmission, Lido Auto Body, Nutley Auto and Tire Center, Parkway Auto Body, Kearny Collision, Jersey Mike’s Subs, S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, and McCormick Plumbing and Heating.

The Cub Scouting program is uniquely designed to meet the needs of young boys and their parents, through offering fun and challenging experiences that boys and parents do together.
