WEST ORANGE, NJ — Due to the recent storm and subsequent damage caused throughout the Township of West Orange, the township and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee have decided to postpone the parade until March 18 and the Pre-Parade Tour until March 16.
According to parade chairperson Sheila Parisi, the decision to postpone was made based on difficult logistical issues, and the safety of both the residents and the township employees working to restore services was paramount.
“We wish to extend a special thank you to the Department of Public Works, West Orange Police Department and West Orange Fire Department for their commitment and dedication to the town and it’s residents during this difficulty time,” she said.
West Orange attorney Joseph Brennan, whose family has helped found and sustain the West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade for the past 67 years, said the event has only been postponed twice in parade history: once for a major snowfall on the day of the parade, and once when there was a Nor’easter two days before it.
Brennan, who worked with Pat Melvin in 1975 to incorporate the parade and write its by-laws, and his niece, Lisa Bogart, recently told TAPinto West Orange about the four generations of their family who have been active in the annual event since its inception. Read their story HERE.
On the day of the parade, Main Street will be closed to traffic (north and south bound) at approximately 11 a.m. to allow for shuttle buses to transport marchers and spectators to the beginning of the Parade Route. Eagle Rock Avenue, beginning at the entrance to Eagle Rock Reservation (east bound) will also be closed to traffic beginning at 11 a.m.
Shuttle buses will begin running at 10:45 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. from the corner of Mississippi Avenue and Eagle Rock Avenue to the beginning of the parade at Main Street and Mt. Pleasant Avenue.
Parking can be found at Our Lady of Lourdes church and school parking lots and on adjacent streets. Parking at the beginning of the parade can also be found streets adjacent to Main Street and Mt. Pleasant Avenue. Those who block driveways will be towed.
The parade route starts at the corners of Main Street & Mt. Pleasant Avenue (West Orange Town Hall) and runs north along Main Street to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Eagle Rock Avenue.
