NUTLEY, NJ - Never one to sit on the sidelines, Nutley Raiders Football coach Steve DiGregorio is setting his sights on tackling hunger in the community by leading a food drive to benefit those in need. This month, DiGregorio is co-hosting a food drive to benefit Nutley Family Service Bureau.

Donations for the NFSB food pantry traditionally trickle during the Summer months leaving the shelves practically bare. The increased demand for supplemental nutritional assistance related to the recession has put an extra burden on the program.

DiGregorio is calling on "Team Nutley" to do the thing that makes the township special: taking on a challenge to help those in need.

On Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be a food drive at the NFSB Annex (the "Thrift Shop Building.") The pantry is in need of non-perishable food items. The greatest needs are shelf stable proteins, tomato products, canned fruit, soup, and boxed cereal.

Canned proteins include peanut butter, tuna, and canned chicken in those cans that look like tuna cans. Fruit includes apple sauce, apple pie filling (makes a great oatmeal topping, mandarin oranges, and canned pineapple.

When purchasing soup, check out the sodium content. Forget milligrams, look at the percentage, the closer the percentage is to a single digit number the better.

Of course donations of pasta and beans will also be greatly appreciated, as will any other non-perishable food donations.

This food drive is being done is partnership with the Nutley Rotary.
