NUTLEY, NJ – For the third consecutive year, TAPinto Nutley is proud to be a supporter of Nutley’s Relay For Life, the ongoing community initiative on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer.
Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for American Cancer Society. 2020 marks the 14th year Nutley is hosting Relay and it’s slated for Friday, May 15, 6:00 pm to 11:30 pm at DeMuro Park on Margaret Avenue.
The 2020 theme is dubbed ‘No Place Like Hope.’
“I believe that hope was born right here in Nutley, New Jersey,” Director of Parks and Recreation Mauro G. Tucci stated at the 2019 Relay. “Here in Nutley when things get tough and people get afflicted with different ailments and different types of cancer, we don’t get down, we don’t give up – we double-down, and we work harder and that’s why we are winning.”
Part of the inspiration of the ‘No Place Like Hope’ motto incorporates Team Annie’s Courage, captained by Anne Rotonda, who reached the prestigious Emerald level in 2019.
Annie’s Courage is the first-ever Emerald team in Nutley Relay history, with over $25,000 raised during the 2018-19 season. Annie’s Courage has already raised $5,000 for the 2019-20 fundraising campaign.
Relay is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around the DeMuro Park track throughout the evening. Each team always has a member on the track to signify that cancer never rests.
At the signature event in May 2019, nearly 400 participants – including 30 cancer survivors – from 40 teams took turns walking around the track throughout the event. In total, $89,000 was raised.
“Each Relay year is unique to me personally, but also for our community as well,” said event chairperson Heather Soto. “I am excited for our 14th Relay year and the start of a new Relay decade for Nutley.”
Relay is a fun night for all ages as each team sets up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by collecting donations from food, goods, games and activities. The money counts towards their overall team fundraising goal.
In the townships’ quest to help end cancer, the organization has raised over $1.3M since the Nutley chapter began in 2007. Relay For Life began nationally in 1985 and is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries.
“This is my tenth-year Relaying as part of this amazing community event,” added Soto, who works year-round volunteering her services coordinating this massive event. “Nutley shines brighter than ever in our voyage for continued research and a cure for cancer.”
Residents are invited to attend the official Relay Kickoff Celebration on Thursday, February 6, 2020, 6:30 pm at Parks and Recreation Center. It’s free of charge, open to the public, includes live entertainment, and dinner is provided by Ralph’s Pizzeria and Restaurant.
There are always numerous pre-event team fundraising functions in the months leading up to the signature Relay event in May.
Last month, the annual Pasta Bingo Night fundraiser was held on November 8 and raised $2,676.00. Dinner was provided by Ralph’s and dessert was donated by Farmers Insurance.
The family-friendly annual IWF Wrestling Event fundraiser with WWE Hall of Famers and WrestleMania Legends is slated for Saturday evening, April 18 at the Parks and Rec Center.
The second annual Chalk Art Festival takes place Sunday afternoon, April 25 at Memorial Park, while the St. Mary’s Church Prayer Service for those affected by cancer is Wednesday evening, April 29.
