NUTLEY, NJ - Campari, Jack Daniels, and Sweet Vermouth walked into a bar, and they became the Boulevardier.
As gastronoms discover new flavors and pairings at the Oakely Kitchen and Cocktails, some classic cocktails, that are 'new to you' are being rediscovered by the next generation of Nutley residents. The 'Boulevardier' is fast becoming the most talked about cocktail in town.
This red cocktail traces it lineage back to the Jazz Age in Paris, and shares some of the components of the well known 'Negroni' cocktail.
A Negroni consists of Campari, Vermouth, and Gin, the Boulevardie retains the Campari and Sweet Vermouth, but takes a decidedly American turn by using Whiskey. At the Oakley the whiskey is Jack Daniels.
So what's the Annie Oakley connection?
Jack Daniels was established in Tennessee in 1866. Anyone who has seen a Western movie knows that cowboys and cowgirls ALWAYS step up to the bar to order a whiskey. Annie Oakley' was the star of 'Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.'
But this cocktail was first created in Paris, in the 1920's, what gives? Annie Oakley performed with Buffalo Bill's tour of Europe, including appearances at the Paris Exposition in the late 1880's. Connect the dots, use a little creative license, and the Boulevardie fits perfectly on the cocktail menu of Nutley's new gastropub.
The Oakley Kitchen and Cocktails is located at 789 Bloomfield Ave. in Nutley, directly across from the On3 Campus. There is parking alongside the buidling and several more spots in the lot that runs between the railroad tracks and the park.
