HACKENSACK, NJ – White Manna has the best burger in New Jersey, according to a newly released ranking.
"A New Jersey legend, White Manna one of the last remaining diner-style burger joints that arose in the tradition of White Castle. What’s served here is the perfect interpretation of that form, honed over decades and decades, unchanging. Walk up to the tiny counter, place your order with the grillman, and watch as he smashes a small wad of meat onto the flattop with a handful of thin-sliced onions, keeps careful track of it as it cooks, and sandwiches it into a Martin’s potato roll."
Founded in 1939 for the World’s Fair, White Manna has become legendary, landing the burger joint on many “best of” lists over the years, including The Daily Meal’s “75 Best Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurants” earlier this year and Conde Nast Traveler’s “Five New Jersey Sandwiches to Eat Before You Die.”
The first White Manna was in Jersey City, followed by the River Street location in Hackensack. Both locations are still open, with the Jersey City restaurant open around-the-clock.
