NUTLEY, NJ - After our successful food, personal care, and toy drive at Nutley Chamber of Commerce's Santa's Arrival, we're doing it again this Sunday at the Living Nativity.
Since launching, TAPinto Nutley has been a major sponsor of Santa's Arrival. This year we tried something a little different and parked three red TAPinto Mini Coopers on the field to serve as collection points for our food, personal care and toy drives. One of the Mini Coopers was the real deal, build in Oxford UK. The other two were reimagined ShopRite shopping carts. Local artisans, Rob Noone and Joy Lin, owners of Pretty Handy, crafted the wooden coopers that will be making appearances at future events.
“We are here at Santa's Arrival every year, we have a full staff covering the event, and we said to ourselves, ‘what else can we do to make it better?’” said John Lee, editorial director for TAPinto Nutley. “So in the spirit of giving back, we set up shopping carts to collect food that will go to food programs distributed by Vincent Church, and we set up a toy drive with the toys to be distributed by the Chieffo family to children in local hospitals.”
Lee continued, “one of the big things that makes local media different is that we get involved in the community, we show up, and have boots on the ground to cover the news, and we are also a part of the events that make the local community the place to be.”
Look for the TAPinto Nutley Mini Coopers in front of Vincent Church Nutley this Sunday evening near the Living Nativity. We'll be collecting personal care items and non-perishable food to support community programs supported by Vincent Church, and new toys for the Chieffo Family toy drive.
The Living Nativity follows the Township of Nutley Tree Lighting, so TAPinto Nutley will be set up around 5:30 p.m. in front of Vincent Church and collect items until after the last performance.
At this time of year, food donations drop off. There is a huge outpouring for Thanksgiving, but, despite that effort, hunger doesn't take a holiday, so the need is always there. Items that are always in need include canned tuna, peanut butter, boxed cereal, canisters of oatmeal, and canned fruit like pineapple. Personal care items like bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes are always in need. These items will be distributed through the programs supported by Vincent Church.
At the same time, we'll also be collecting new, unwrapped toys as a part of the Chieffo Family Toy Drive. Each year the Chieffo Family collects toys to distribute to children in pediatric care in hospitals. After seeing the outpouring of love at last year's toy drive, TAPinto Nutley decided to used our voice to reach out to the community to help collect toys for this effort. The Chieffo Family toy drive continues for another week, and concludes with a big block party on Gerard Road. Sat. Dec. 14.
