NUTLEY, NJ - The Nutley Educational Foundation's "We've Got Your Back" backpack drive came to a close this week as the back-to-school items were distributed to Nutley families this week at the Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) annex on Chestnut St.
The annual drive, now in its third year, pools the resources and reach of the Nutley Educational Foundation with the food pantry clients of NFSB.
About midsummer, NFSB determines the number of their food pantry clients who are eligible for free and reduced lunches in the Nutley Public School system. Because of confidentiality, only the number of backpacks is ever shared, no student or family information is shared. That's when the drive shifts into high gear.
The volunteers at the educational foundation reach out to their supporters and the community at large for donations of backpacks and school supplies. Cash donations are used to fill the gaps in supply donations. This year, a team of volunteers gathered at NFSB annex to fill the backpacks with school supplies.
On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, during food pantry distribution, those families in the free and reduced lunch program received their back to school supplies. Local resident volunteers, and missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, worked the line to help distribute food and backpacks.
