I will refer to Maria Hamlin as Chief because that is how I met her and how I will always remember her.
Being a Chief is the highest enlisted military rank earned and it takes great drive and total commitment to the utmost personal and professional standards. When I transferred into the unit that Chief Hamlin was part of, I immediately felt her professionalism, decision-making ability, and dependability. I knew I found a mentor to help guide my success and a leader to lead our Airman.
A leader is defined as the person who leads or commands a group, organization or country. Chief is more than that, she is dedicated to not only leading but ensuring success and morale go along with it.
John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” I will attest to Chief Hamlin being the one who inspired me to do just that.
I have dreamed of being a nurse practitioner and I am on my path to do that, I have learned more about myself and my subordinates because of her, and do more than sometimes I want to (wink, smile!) and I have become more. I was promoted to a Senior Noncommissioned officer because of her. She saw my true potential, my passion to be a leader and my drive for success. She has lead me to path I can confidently lead others.
They say a legacy is not leaving something for people. Its leaving something in people. Chief Maria Hamlin left countless leadership qualities in me: drive, confidence, integrity, courage and humility just to name a few. She will lead Nutley to be a better place.
She will leave something in each and every individual in the community.
She will lead one team, one theme, Nutley!
She will make your community proud to call her your commissioner.
