NUTLEY, NJ - In the past week, two petitions emerged on the virtual petition site Change.org requesting the Township of Nutley to take action on the Christopher Columbus statue on the lawn of Nutley Town Hall.
One petition calls for the removal of the statue and renaming of the annual Nutley-Belleville Columbus Day parade. The petition is called "RENAME The Nutley Belleville Columbus Day Parade & REMOVE The Nutley Columbus Statue."
That petition states "To continue on with a parade and statue that glorify Columbus only says that we condone and embrace the enslavement, rape, and murder of the indigenous people of the Americas."
The petition continues: "Both Nutley and Belleville have a large Italian demographic and we welcome the celebration of their Italian heritage, especially during Italian Heritage month. There is no reason that the parade cannot be renamed to something that better represents their history and heritage. The same goes for replacing the current Nutley statue.
This is not meant to disparage Italians, and this is not a rewriting of history. This is an opportunity to finally acknowledge the truth about this country's history and what this man did. We need to do better, and this is a small step in the right direction."
Shortly after that petition went live, a counter petition, "[Nutley, NJ] Leave the Damn Columbus Statue Alone" appeared on the site.
That petition reads: "History is our greatest teacher, our greatest ally when it comes to dealing with evil and maligned forces looking to re-write or change events of the past, In order to confuse, obfuscate and demoralize a country and its people."
The creator of that petition also wrote, "These forces wish to divide and conquer the greatest country that God has ever created, and This “woke” generation have been tasked as the foot soldiers to accomplish this end in order to make way for Communist China to be the new world super power, and a New World Order. These “children” are still too young to realize anything about real life, sacrifice or hardship. They have yet to get married, start a family, pay taxes, make investments and endure anything meaningful or lasting in their lives."
Both petitions are on Change.org:
